Three people, including a 1-year-old, died after a semi-truck plowed into stopped traffic in a work zone on Interstate 71, triggering a pileup involving nine vehicles, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Modou Ngom, 50, of Columbus, was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide following the collision. He was booked into the Delaware County Jail.
Troopers said the crash happened at approximately 6:27 p.m. in the northbound lanes near the U.S. Route 36 interchange.
Investigators said Ngom was driving a 2006 Freightliner semi-truck northbound when he failed to stop for vehicles that had slowed in the construction zone. The truck struck multiple stopped cars from behind, setting off a chain-reaction crash that ultimately involved nine vehicles.
The three people killed were riding in a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado and were all from Ashley, Ohio. Authorities identified them as a 37-year-old man, a 36-year-old woman and a 1-year-old child. Their identities were being withheld pending further notification of kin, troopers said.
Three additional people suffered serious injuries that were not considered life-threatening. They were taken to area hospitals.
Both directions of I-71 were closed for several hours while rescue crews responded and reconstruction experts investigated the site.
